by Mike Barrett

Bad breath, medically known as halitosis, can be an extremely embarrassing problem. The issue isn’t a serious one, but it could leave you feeling dirty, uncomfortable, self-conscious, or even socially isolated. With Americans spending upwards of $6.7 billion total on mouth freshening products in 2007, it is no surprise to find out that bad breath is the 3rd top reason for seeking dental aid. But you’ll be happy to find out that artificial mouth freshening products simply aren’t necessary, that there are many home remedies for bad breath that can be taken advantage of.

Primary Causes

Bad breath is an issue with many causes as well as many solutions. The primary cause of bad breath is overall poor dental hygiene, but there are other certainly other causes to consider. Here are the main reasons you may be experiencing bad breath:

Poor dental hygiene – plaque, rotting food in between the teeth, gum disease

Dry mouth (xerostomia)

Abscessed tooth

Cavities

Acid reflux

Dentures

Eating certain foods

Tobacco

Medication

Diabetes

The issue of bad breath may seem trivial, and it likely is at first, but it could lead to numerous other problems you simply won’t want to deal with. Luckily, there are many natural ways to get rid of bad breath naturally. If you want to go a different route than artificial mouth freshening products, try utilizing one or more of the home remedies for bad breath listed below.

Home Remedies for Bad Breath

Brush Your Teeth – It is essential for most people to brush regularly (preferably with fluoride-free toothpaste) not only to wipe away bad breath, but to maintain oral health. Brushing at least twice a day will help to reduce plaque buildup and reduce any chances of developing gum disease. Brushing with a split mixture of Himalayan salt and baking soda can be especially effective. Brush your tongue along with your teeth.

Floss – Along with brushing, flossing is another important step in maintaining oral health and subsequently reducing the chance for bad breath. These are basic tips, but important ones nonetheless. Try to make a habit by always flossing after you brush your teeth at the end of the day. Some people will see a notable difference in oral health in a just one week.

Oil Pulling - By engaging in an activity known as oil pulling, which involves swishing oil around in your mouth, you can boost oral health and kill bacteria in your mouth. It may not be a great short-term solution, but it’s certainly an interesting long-term solution to consider. and even whiten your teeth. The process is also used as one of many teeth whitening home remedies.

Apple Cider Vinegar – It may seem odd, but many people attest to apple cider vinegar’s ability to rid bad breath away. Just mix a tablespoon of ACV in some water and use it as a mouthwash, gargling for 10 seconds at a time.

Hydrogen Peroxide – One of the most popular home remedies for bad breath, hydrogen peroxide is one of the top solutions on Earthclinic. Simply mix 3 parts 3% hydrogen peroxide with 5 parts water and use the mixture as a mouthwash. Some have found mixing 1 tablespoon of baking soda with 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide to be a solutions as well. The effect should last much longer than typical mouthwash. (Note: It is recommended to replace mercury fillings before using hydrogen peroxide, as mercury may be leached with use).

Parsley – A bacteria-killing compound found in parsley chlorophyll is great for handling unwanted bacteria in the mouth. Just chew some parsley leaves or nibble on a sprig to get rid of bad breath.

Fennel seeds - Fennel seeds not only add a desirable odor to your breath, but they also prevent overgrowth of bacteria by alkalizing saliva. Further, these seeds are super easy to carry while out of the house or traveling.

Other Tips to Get Rid of Bad Breath

Avoid certain foods or drinks if you don’t want your breath to smell at a specific time. Foods include onions, garlic, coffee, beer, wine, whiskey, and cheese.

Drink plenty of water to avoid dry mouth.

Supplement with zinc. Zinc helps maintain a clean mouth.

Tea tree oil. Just place some drops of tea tree oil on your toothbrush along with your toothpaste. Alternatively, coat your floss in tea tree oil.

Using equal parts of sage, calendula, and myrrh extracts, create a mixture and gargle with the mixture four times daily. Keep the mixture tightly sealed in a container.

Take probiotics and shift to a healthy diet. A deficiency in beneficial flora in your gut could be the cause of bad breath.

Use organic mint

As always, remember to share which solutions you use to get rid of bad breath, as well as which home remedies for bad breath haven’t worked for you.

(NaturalNews) With almost 50 million uninsured Americans in today’s world and roughly three million living below the poverty level, healthcare providers have an obligation and duty to help patients of all ages, economical status levels, with and without insurance; but how many providers do? Chiropractors can benefit by reaching out to lower income communities by restructuring fee scales to meet the needs of the majority of Americans living in pain and poverty to get the help they are entitled to.

Helping those in need

Most minimum wage workers stand for long hours, perform repetitive motions and are under high amounts of stress to increase output. “Low back pain (LBP) continues to be one of the costliest work-related injuries in the United States in terms of disability and treatment costs” (Cifuentes, 2011). Oftentimes, workers do not have sick pay and do not have time to recuperate or seek proper medical attention for their injuries, typically musculoskeletal in nature, nor do they have the financial means to seek out such care. Retail, mechanic/automotive, hair/nail stylist, food, factory, airline, lawn maintenance and hospitality employees all work long hours with low wages, with minimal or no benefits to cover typical medical costs or alternative healthcare options.

Who needs us

About 60 percent of the people who seek chiropractic care are for back and neck pain conditions. The current “typical” chiropractic patient is a white, educated middle-aged individual. An “ideal” chiropractic patient is a white, middle-aged, educated, financially stable female, both of which disregard the majority of the working class population that is in need of chiropractic services. Universal healthcare, also known as Obamacare, which will be taking effect in 2014, can help to offer chiropractic care to hardworking, yet less fortunate individuals in need of natural, non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical care options.

Along with the working force, children can also benefit from regular chiropractic adjustments. Poor postural habits, usually developed as a child, can lead to long-term musculoskeletal conditions. If parents have limited access to chiropractic care, chances are, so do their children.

Why has this taken so long?

Although the new healthcare act will help millions more people access healthcare they could not previously obtain financially, why has it taken this long to allow medical care to lower income individuals? Chiropractic care typically costs less and is more effective than taking prescription medications, surgery and emergency room visits. The latest chiropractic research proves that it can reduce musculoskeletal symptoms, yet millions do not have access to this natural pain relief option. “Patients suffering nonspecific work-related LBP who received health services mostly or only from a chiropractor had a lower risk of recurrent disability than the risk of any other provider type. Chiropractor services generally cost less than services from other providers” (Cifuentes, 2011).

Community outreach

Healthcare companies, like Planned Parenthood, offer a sliding scale payment system to allow patients of all financial statuses to receive the care they need and deserve. With the low overhead cost of running a chiropractic office, there is no reason why chiropractors cannot offer similar options. Workers that do receive chiropractic care for common injuries can help to eliminate pain, minimize the chronicity of their problem and long-term disability, improve work performance, lead to less sick days away from the job, boost their immunity and have an improved quality of life! Workers that have their pain managed by chiropractic care are overall much healthier and have an increased work performance, which benefits both worker and employer.

Written by Elizabeth Renter

Multiple sclerosis is a bit of a mystery. It is a disease that occurs when the immune system damages the myelin sheath surrounding nerves, with effects being from mild to severe. Science is truly at a loss as to why it happens, why it is more common in northern latitudes, and why the damage that occurs varies so widely. But rest assured, there are numerous lifestyle tips for preventing and treating multiple sclerosis naturally.

MS is considered an auto-immune disease, where the immune system attacks the nervous system. A definite cause is unknown, but symptoms can vary from mild (numbness, tingling, tremor, etc.) to severe (extreme weakness, loss of vision, electric-shock sensations, slurred speech, extreme fatigue, and limited mobility). Usually, the symptoms come and go. In most cases, the disease worsens with time, with periods of remission getting shorter or nonexistent as the disease progresses.

Because the disease is a bit of a mystery, so is treating it. Of course, Big Pharma has come out with prescription solutions, but they are very expensive, come with a long list of side effects, and aren’t guaranteed to work. Fortunately, many people with multiple sclerosis have found relief through natural means.

Some Potential, Natural Solutions for MS

Because the disease varies widely, so too do the solutions. MS patients are cautioned that what works for one person, may not work for them – not so surprising. However, these potential solutions have had success in many people who suffer from the potentially debilitating disease.

1. Practice Healthy Living - While this tip may seem vague, things like stress and lack of sleep can worsen the symptoms of MS. For that reason, it’s important to take care of yourself. Exercising regularly, meditating, and sleeping on a set schedule could help to minimize your symptoms. Don’t sit around all day, and try not to fill your day with stress and anxiety.

2. Eliminate Some Foods - Some foods have been shown to aggravate the symptoms of MS. These include highly processed foods, polyunsaturated vegetable oils (like those in margarine), artificial sweeteners and preservatives, and gluten. For many, eliminating grains altogether seems to lessen symptoms markedly.

3. Add Other Foods - Other foods have shown promise in healing the body and reducing MS symptoms. These include: foods rich in Omega-3 fats (fish, nuts, etc.), grass-fed proteins, healthy fat sources (coconut oil, olives, avocados, etc.), and fermented food and drinks (kefir, apple cider vinegar, kimchi, and sauerkraut).

4. Use Herbs - Anti-inflammatory herbs may help when symptoms are at their worst. Some helpful herbs and spices that are easily added to foods are turmeric, ginger, thyme, cinnamon, oregano, rosemary, and clove. Evening primrose oil, more difficult to find, may also help because of its concentration of gamma-linoleic acid, which helps optimize nervous system function.

In addition to these changes, a vitamin D supplement may help with MS. Some research suggests there is a link between low vitamin D levels and the rate at which MS patients experience relapses. The best vitamin D source is regular sunshine, however, you can also get a D3 supplement if you fear you are deficient.

Another study published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry found that a cannabis extract has positive effects on the treatment of multiple sclerosis symptoms.

Natural treatments for multiple sclerosis depend mostly on living a healthy lifestyle and abstaining from highly processed and dangerous foods. This can be done with a significant amount of determination and motivation. And when the symptoms of MS are at their peak, they provide a serious amount of motivation to maintain even tough lifestyle changes.

Marijuana.com

A Michigan man driving high and 30 miles per hour above the speed limit won his Michigan Supreme Court Appeal yesterday, as the court decided he wasn’t necessarily “breaking the law” by driving high. According to Michigan’s court, the police were unable to demonstrate that the THC within Rodney Koon’s system contributed to his erratic driving.

Since cannabis has a calming affect and has actually been linked to increased driver awareness, it’s virtually impossible to prove a man is “under the influence”–which this Michigan police offer failed to do. It’s an interesting case to keep an eye on

It’s illegal for Michigan drivers to consume marijuana. But the state high court said medical marijuana users have some protection. The court says police must show that a driver actually was “under the influence” of marijuana for a charge to stick.

At the same time, the law prohibits driving “while under the influence of marijuana.” But it fails to specify what level of marijuana in the body constitutes being “under the influence,” the opinion said.

The court suggested lawmakers consider setting a marijuana limit, similar to a blood alcohol level.

“It goes almost without saying that the (medical marijuana law) is an imperfect statute, the interpretation of which has repeatedly required this Court’s intervention,” the justices said. “Indeed, this case could have been easily resolved if the (law) had provided a definition of ‘under the influence.’” [USA Today]

Again, numerous studies have shown empirical evidence that driving after blazing actually increases driver awarenessand perhaps equally safe (if not safer) as driving sober. And certainly safter than driving while texting. Or drunk.

Yet, in the legal weed state of Colorado, one hit off a joint means you’ll soon get nailed with a DUI.

MG Siegler/Techcrunch

A few weeks ago, Chris Dixon tweeted something thought-provoking: “What were the last Hollywood movies you saw about technology & the future that were optimistic? They seem to be systematically dystopian.”

I happened to be sitting in a movie theater waiting for Iron Man 3 to start, so I tried to come up with a good counter-example. It’s a lot harder than I thought it would be. Then the pre-movie trailers starting playing. The new Will Smith (and son) flick, After Earth: dystopia. The new Guillermo del Toro flick,Pacific Rim: dystopia. Even the new Superman flick, Man of Steel, could be classified as a technological dystopia (more below).

Sure, there are some films — mainly smaller indies — that in some ways are starting to buck the trend. But overall, Dixon (and Peter Thiel, who Dixon says he got the idea from) are right: Hollywood seems to hate technology. Why?

My initial thought is simply that dystopia sells. It’s the same reason why the mainstream media covering technology tends to harp on the downsides of new tech, sometimes to the point of fear mongering. They are tracking you! They want to know your location! They want to record you going to the bathroom!

Most people are predisposed to fear what they do not understand. Hollywood’s futuristic films are simply playing to this fear in the same way that horror films are packed with moments meant to startle you.

This is nothing new. In 1927, Fritz Lang’s Metropolis — the very first feature-length science fiction film — told of a 2026 where the lower class workers power the technology for the upper class. In 1951,The Day the Earth Stood Still saw aliens bring a giant robot to Earth that would destroy the planet if humans couldn’t get their act together. The 1960 version of The Time Machine (based on the H.G. Wells book) had technology (nuclear weapons) destroying civilization. 2001. A Clockwork Orange. Soylent Green. Alien. Blade Runner. The list goes on.

The difference is that we now live in a society where advanced technology permeates all of our lives. Nearly everyone now walks around with computers in their pockets that are far more powerful than the computers that filled up rooms just a few decades ago. Nearly the entirety of human knowledge is now just a few clicks or swipes away at any given moment. The vast majority of our recent technological breakthroughs, I think everyone would agree, have been overwhelmingly good for society.

And yet, Hollywood still seems sure that this is going to change. That at some point, our meddling with technology will create HAL 9000 or Skynet, and technology will turn on us.

The example I ended up tweeting back at Dixon as an answer to his thesis was Star Trek. AsGrantland noted recently in looking back at the 25th anniversary of Star Trek: The Next Generation:

by Elizabeth Renter

An easy to grow and wonderful smelling plant, lemon balm has many healing applications and medicinal uses. If you grow your own herbs and plants to use for cooking and healing, then lemon balm is one plant you must have in your growing herb garden. You can cook with it, perfume with it, and heal with it. So, what’s not to love?

Background and History

Native to southern Europe and the Mediterranean, but now found growing in the wild across the globe, lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a member of the mint family (like oregano, thyme, and peppermint, of course). Though while the leaves are shaped similarly to others in the mint family, slightly thickened with deep veins, one thing that sets lemon balm apart is its scent. The herb has a sweet lemony smell, which likely made the plant all the more popular over the years.

In the 17th century, a concoction known as Carmelite Water, produced by the French Carmelite nuns, contained lemon balm and was used as a “miracle water” for improving memory, reducing pain, encouraging digestive health, and improving mood, among other things. It’s also been used over the centuries as a wound healer and relaxation-promoter. In gardens, it’s always been known as a great way to attract pollinators.

Healing Properties Medicinal Uses of Lemon Balm

As with most plants in the mint family, Melissa officinalis has a wealth of health benefits. Bruise the plant with your fingers and you can smell the oils credited with many of these healing properties. It’s antiviral and anxiolytic properties are of particular note.

As mentioned, lemon balm has always been recognized as a relaxation aid and used to ease insomnia and anxiety. Modern studies have affirmed this age-old use and found that particularly when used in conjunction with other relaxing herbs, like Valerian, it shows promise as an anxiety treatment.

Mike Adams/Natural News

Voters in Portland, Oregon solidly defeated a city-wide water fluoridation measure yesterday, with 60% of the voters saying “NO!” to the practice of adding toxic fluoride chemicals to the water.

The result is a huge victory for www.CleanWaterPortland.org and all the men, women and children of Portland who can now rest easier, knowing their tap water is not intentionally poisoned with cancer-causing chemicals derived from industrial waste and mislabeled “fluoride.”

The defeat of the measure absolutely infuriated fluoride-pushing doctors and dentists, many of whom resorted to using outrageous lies and dirty tricks during the entire campaign. These lies include whoppers like, “Drinking fluoride has never harmed anyone” and “this is naturally-occurring fluoride, therefore it’s safe.”

Fluoride advocates reject real science

Nowhere is there a more obscene departure from real science than in the “scientific” community of fluoride pushers. These people very well know that all sorts of “naturally-occurring” elements in the table of elements are extremely toxic to the human body. Mercury is toxic, yet it occurs naturally. Arsenic is highly toxic, yet it occurs naturally as well. I dare any of these fluoride pushers to chug a glass containing lead or cadmium.

To claim that fluoride is healthful merely because it is found in water wells and the Earth’s crust is an outrageously evil deception. Fluoride POISONS water wells around the world, and populations go to great lengths to try to remove it from their water! Fluoride pushers know this, but they seem to be determined to make sure as many people as possible are harmed through fluoridation, possibly as a way to make sure there’s more medical business in the future due to toxic fluoride side effects.

“Fluoride” is actually a toxic combination of chemicals and heavy metals

Most of the fluoride dumped into U.S. water supplies, by the way, is imported from China. And it just happens to be heavily contaminated with lead, arsenic, cadmium and other toxic metals. No city in the United States tests its fluoride for these contaminants and openly publicizes the results. It’s all one big toxic secret, and the doctors and dentists who support fluoridation want to make sure it stays that way.

Shhh! Science isn’t allowed when we discuss fluoride! You’re supposed to just buy into the “cult” of it, without asking any scientific questions.

But even environmental groups understand this stuff is highly toxic. “…there is no safe exposure level for arsenic and lead,” said Antonia Giedwoyn, a Sierra Club spokeswoman in Portland. “Why would we want to add any level of heavy metals to our water, that our kids and our parents and we ourselves drink?” (SOURCE).

Fluoridation proponents are some of the most dangerous, life-hating people you’ll ever meet

By the way, in my more than ten years of being an investigative reporter, activist and pioneer in online health news and information, I have never met a more arrogant, insidious and life-hating group of people than those who push for water fluoridation. Across the board, these people behave like psychopathic criminals who want to unleash death and destruction across every city in the world. They are very much like the “mad scientists” that Batman defeats in major motion pictures. They’ve abandoned any desire to listen to reason or logic, and they don’t even recognize real science anymore.

Gaye Levy/Activist Post

There are lots of lists floating around the web citing the top items that will disappear following a disaster or emergency. Heck, I even posted a list a couple of years ago titled 100 Items Likely to Disappear First when the SHTF.

A while, back, however, Tom Sciacca from Camping Survival came up with his own list of 50 things that would disappear from store shelves during an emergency. It is a great list especially since it is broken down into the categories of Food, Power and Light, Fun, First Aid and more. Today I would like to share that list with you.

But first I would like to announce the winner of the recent Camping Survival giveaway. After removing duplicates, there were 119 entries, each suggesting topics for Backdoor Survival. All good questions that I hope to address over the coming months.

Alas, there could only be one winner and “Bill” was selected at random. He is the winner of a Rothco Medium Transport Pack stuffed with a few hanks of paracord – all from Camping Survival, of course. Congratulations, Bill. I have contacted you by email for instructions for claiming your prize.

I would like to thank everyone for their entry. I have two exciting new giveaways coming up so be sure to watch for an announcement soon.

The Top 50 Things to Disappear from Store Shelves during an Emergency [Tom]

Have you ever noticed how, whenever a big storm is predicted, people start rushing to stores to clean them out of ever food item and supply they have on the shelves? In one sense, it’s probably good that they are trying to anticipate the emergency, despite being last-minute about it. It sure beats those people who don’t bother to prepare at all, then complain when emergency services are overwhelmed by requests for assistance.

But why panic in the first place? Why not have a stash of necessary items always ready for such an emergency? Even if there isn’t a storm approaching, it’s nice to know that you don’t have to rush out to the store every time you run out of toilet paper. Keeping some extra around the house is always a good idea!

With this in mind, I decided to ask CampingSurvival.com’s Facebook fans what they felt were the emergency supplies that stores were most likely to run out of when people start to panic. Then I compiled the top comments in various categories so I could share it with you. Since this list is based on the comments of our Facebook fan page, some of the items (canned meat, for instance) may not be the absolute first things for a store to run out of, but are still items that you should consider having among your emergency supplies nonetheless.

Without further ado, here the list of the Top 50 Things to Disappear from Store Shelves during an Emergency, compiled by yours truly [Tom]:

FOOD

1. Bread
2. Butter
3. Cereal
4. Coffee
5. Eggs
6. Flour

Technology deemed by some to be too dangerous to sell to public

A new firearm featuring high-end precision technology went on sale this past Wednesday, and some in the shooting community are calling it too dangerous to be sold to the general public.

The gun — a rifle — is called “TrackingPoint” and it is, more or less, a “smart” firearm. The user looks through the rifle’s scope, which features an advanced color graphics display, and when locked in on a target, pulls the trigger. The catch, though, is that the gun does not fire right away — instead, it holds off until it is pointed in exactly the right place, taking into consideration several different variables, including wind, shake, and distance to target.

Only when the moment to fire is most optimal does the gun discharge.
