Weed Cannon Used to Shoot Pot Over Border

Perhaps the one positive aspect of the black-market created by marijuana prohibition is that it breeds innovation. The latest example comes from Mexicali, Mexico where police discovered a homemade cannon used by inventive smugglers to fire pot over the border.

The cannon was rigged to use compressed air powered by a car engine to shoot marijuana through a plastic pipe into the United States. Authorities say the cannon was capable of firing as much as 30 pounds of pot over 500 feet.

Cops have been investigating a possible weed cannon since finding scattered packages of pot on the US side of the border months ago. Last December, Border Patrol agents discovered a total of 85 pounds of marijuana and a carbon dioxide tank they believe was used to fire the pot from the cannon.

While no one would consider the cannon new technology, it is certainly a cut above the pot catapult police recovered in January 2011. Smugglers were said to be using the catapult, mounted on an SUV, to fling marijuana into Arizona.
